Webb Hall serves as
UWA’s main administration building. A stately, three-story structure
Webb Hall’s most recognizable architectural elements are the white
columns that have come to symbolize UWA. Webb Hall’s other famous
feature is the long inviting southern style front porch furnished with
comfortable rocking chairs. Legend has it during the term of UWA’s
second president, Dr. George William Brock, one particular column had to
constantly be repainted because Dr. Brock rubbed the paint off as he
rocked in his favorite chair. (The rocking chairs, after all, were said to
be his idea.)
The original Webb Hall was constructed in
the late 1800’s and was destroyed by fire in 1909. A second structure
was completed in 1911, but also burned. The third Webb Hall was built in
1914 and was completed as it now stands in 1926. It has served as a women’s
dormitory and cafeteria. In addition to offices, Webb Hall also is the
site of the Webb Hall Parlor, used for many formal receptions and
gatherings, and the Webb Hall Gallery where several different art exhibits
are on display each year. The McConnell Chimes are also housed in Webb
Hall.
In Webb Hall you will find: the
Provost’s Office, University Printing, Information Systems Office, the
President’s Office, Development Office, Business Office, Admissions
Offices, Financial Aid Office, Student Life Office, the Registrars Office,
Alumni Affairs Office, and University Relations Office.
